When it comes to conserving energy within your home, there are loads of options. The great thing is that most of them are simple fixes, and don’t require you to make extensive changes to your home. Conserving energy can help you cut the costs of your energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint – doing good for your pocket and for the environment! Here are just some of the methods you can experiment with to conserve energy in your house today.

Install double glazing

If you have single glazing in your home, then you will be losing heat at an unnecessarily high rate. A simple fix is to replace your single glazing with double glazing. This additional layer of glass introduces a layer of air in the cavity between the two panes, which is what stops the thermal waves from being able to travel through the window so easily. This ensures that as much heat as possible is kept within your home, and as much cold air as possible is kept out!

Insulate your roof and walls

A huge amount of heat escapes through uninsulated roofs and walls within homes, so invest in insulation to ensure that as much heat as possible stays within your property.

Replace outdated windows

Do you have cold spots or draughts around your home? If so, your outdated windows could be to blame. Check to see if the frames are damaged in any way (if they’re timber frames, they may have swollen, cracked or rotted). Put your hand close to the window and see if you can feel a draught. If you can, then replace the windows to help with conserving energy.

Shut the doors and close the curtains

A really simple way to conserve energy within your home is to shut the doors and close the curtains. Just as you might put on multiple layers of clothing to keep your body warm in the cold weather, you can create additional layers within your home to keep the heat in.

Programme your thermostat

In recent years, there has been a big emphasis on smart meters and taking control over when and how your property uses energy. By programming your thermostat, you can make sure that your heating and hot water only comes on when you and your family need it.

Make sure your boiler is efficient

An inefficient boiler is a sure-fire way to waste energy. If you think your boiler needs an upgrade, get this sorted as soon as possible, as you’ll soon notice the difference in your bills!
